Bihorski carpets are traditional handwoven wool rugs from northern Montenegro, whose motifs preserve the stories, beliefs, and aesthetic expression of the Bihor region. They are created on wooden looms in village households, and their geometric and symbolic ornaments are connected to motifs found in everyday mountain culture on carved wooden chests, cradles, tools, and in architecture. Wood and wool together form the foundation of local craftsmanship.
The carpets are woven from local wool dyed with natural pigments, and the process can take weeks or months. The skill of weaving is passed down through generations of Bihor women, while the wooden looms and tools are made from carefully selected types of wood, reflecting a close connection between weaving and woodworking knowledge.
Today, the tradition of Bihor carpets is being revived through the work of local artisans and associations, who present them at cultural events and workshops, preserving the cultural identity of Bihor and its deep connection to nature and mountain life.
