Crno Jezero (Black Lake) lies beneath the northern slopes of Mt. Međed, surrounded by dense spruce and fir forests that give the lake its dark, mirror like surface. Fed by underground springs and snowmelt, it is the largest and most iconic lake in Durmitor National Park, shaped over centuries by ice and water. Exposed tree roots along the shore reveal seasonal water-level changes and are linked in local folklore to mountain fairies that once danced by the lake.

The lake reflects a close relationship between forest and water: fallen trunks slowly decompose into habitats for mosses and insects, while living trees protect the shoreline and stabilize the ecosystem. A marked circular trail, following historic herders’ paths, allows visitors to explore without damaging sensitive roots.

Today, Crno Jezero is the symbolic gateway to Durmitor and the heart of Žabljak’s tourism, popular with families, hikers, and photographers, and recognized as one of northern Montenegro’s most attractive natural sites.
